Akhilesh Pandey Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore

Dr. Akhilesh Pandey is currently a Professor at the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine and the Departments of Biological Chemistry, Oncology and Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also the Founder and Director of the Institute of Bioinformatics, a non-profit research institute in Bangalore, India. He has pioneered methods for quantitative proteomics (SILAC) and for analysis of post-translational modifications by mass spectrometry. He has also developed a number of bioinformatics resources and databases that are widely used by the biomedical research community including Human Protein Reference Database. Dr. Pandey’s laboratory is taking a systems biology approach by combining many 'Omics' technologies to study signal transduction pathways in health and cancer. His group has integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses with studies in cellular and animal models to identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in pancreas, breast and esophageal cancers. More recently, he is using next generation sequencing technologies for problems ranging from microbial diagnosis to understanding cancer pathogenesis.
