He did post-doctoral study in Texas Tech University and was a Visiting Scientist in Univ. of Missouri, Rutgers University, USA and IRRI, Philippines. He was a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Fellow in Cornell University, USA. He is an Adjunct Professor, ANESC, Univ. of Tokyo, Japan. His research interest is ‘Genetic improvement of rice for water-limited environments’. His research team has mapped QTLs for grain yield and root growth under drought in rainfed ecosystem using local landraces. Developed rice near isogenic lines for root QTLs using MAB. Involved in the testing and release of rice variety, Anna 4 for rainfed districts of Tamil Nadu. He has guided 30 research fellows and has published 50 research papers in rice drought resistance research.
