Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Founded as an East India Company trading post under the colonial rule, it was India's first capital of the British Raj from 1773–1911 and the Port of Kolkata is the oldest operating port in India. Bengal known for its intellects, leaders and delicious desserts was once known to be the intellectual capital of India. The city’s original name was Kalikshetra, meaning “Ground of (the goddess) Kali, and is widely regarded as the "cultural capital” and is known for its magnificent colonial architecture, art, music and festivals. Kolkata is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational hub in the Eastern part of India and have immensely contributed to Spirituality, Literature, Art, Music, Science and what not and has been home to many nobel laureates.
